In the summer of 1936, the great dream of many mountaineers from all over Europe is to be the first to conquer the infamous Eiger North Face. The thoughts of the two Berchtesgaden climbing aces Toni Kurz and Andi Hinterstoisser revolve around nothing else. The two are convinced that they can do it, even though numerous attempts on the "Murder Wall" ended fatally. But the first ascent not only promises the longed-for social advancement, but also Olympic gold. During the preparations at the foot of the North Face, Toni and Andi surprisingly meet Luise, Toni's childhood sweetheart, who is supposed to report on the first ascent as a journalist alongside the Nazi reporter Arau. Toni still loves Luise, but she seems to be succumbing to the charming Arau. Desperate, Toni and Andi begin the ascent of the North Face, closely followed by the two Austrians Willy Angerer and Edi Rainer. At first, everything goes brilliantly and both teams make rapid progress. From the terrace of the Grand Hotel at the foot of the Eiger, they are watched with telescopes and great excitement by onlookers and the world press. Also by Luise, who recognizes who her true love is. But then the mountaineers lose control: Willy is hit on the head by a rockfall, the weather changes, and the four alpinists are forced to turn back. Once again, it looks as if the mountain will win, and while a dramatic struggle for survival rages in the North Face, Luise sets out to save her beloved. A race against time and the forces of nature begins...
